California Day Trips

Mojave National Preserve

Located halfway between Las Vegas, Nevada and Los Angeles, California the Mojave National Preserve offers a place for people who live in the major metropolitan areas a place to getaway and find some serenity and solitude from blacktop and busy buildings. It’s over 1 million acres of park that has many sand dunes, forests of Joshua Trees, wildflowers, and volcanic cinder cones. Take a day trip to the Mojave National Preserve and you will find many remnants of days gone by during the gold rush era while you are there.

Located between I-40 and I-15 just east of Barstow, California.

LAS is the closest airport at 60 miles with ONT being 140 miles away.

The Mojave National Preserve is open every day of the week, all year long. The different park attractions have different hours with the Kelso Depot Visitor Center having hours every day from 9-5 and the Hole in the Wall Information Center being available October through April months on Wednesday through Sunday from 9-4.

Camping is permitted in this California National Park in campgrounds, along the roadside, and even with your horses. There are some great places to camp in the Mojave National Preserve no matter how experienced of a camper you are. Bring the family for a wonderful camping experience they won’t soon forget. If you have a few days on your hands and you are looking for something to do, consider camping in the Mojave National Preserve so that you can experience more of what this beautiful park has to offer.

If you plan on bringing your horses, you must bring food for them as well. Only non-seeded hay and pellet food are permitted and they are not allowed to graze at all. Manure doesn’t have to be picked up but the park asks that you at least spread it out so it’s not just a big pile. You can bring up to 7 horses per group of people but if you are bringing more than that, you have to get a permit for them. There is nowhere in the preserve to rent a horse.

You can also bring your 4-wheel drive vehicles to the preserve. This is the best way to see the preserve because many of the places you can go in a 4 wheel drive are off limits to other travelers. 4 wheelers have to stay on the current dirt roads and paths and cannot just take off and 4 wheel in an area that has not been traveled on previously.

The Mojave National Preserve also has many tours that you can take to see and experience the most while you are here. Make sure you add this National Park to your list of things to do if you are vacationing in the California area.
