California Day Trips

The Watts Towers - Los Angeles, California

The Watts Towers are a complex of open-work towers constructed out of structural steel and mortar that were built by the hands of one man, Sam Rodia. For over 30 years he worked on constructing these towers that he called “Nuestro Pueblo” which translates to “our town”. It’s a wonderful place to take the family for sightseeing in California. You get to see just how powerful Sam Rodia’s vision for making this art was.

The Watts Towers

Structural steel and mortar? How exciting can that be? If this is what you are thinking, you are wrong. He also used broken glass, sea shells, pottery and tile to make them beautiful. The sheer height of these structures alone is worth seeing especially knowing that one man made them with his bare hands and a window-washer’s belt and buckle.

If you are in the Los Angeles, California and are looking for things to do, make this a trip to remember by visiting the Watts Towers. The price for adults is only $7, seniors and kids 12-17 only $3 and kids under 12 are free with an adult.

You get to go on a complete tour of the facility and learn about the factual history and folklore that surrounds these towers. The hours of operation are Wed-Sun from 10-4 with the last tour being offered at 3. You can also come on Sundays from noon to 4pm with the last tour also being at 3.

There are also other artists work that is now displayed in the Art Center. It’s a great way to spend the day.
