You can see Lassen Peak for many miles while driving across northern California, it’s summit is one thousand feet higher than any other one in the area. Lassen is also the biggest plug dome volcano in the world. It was originally a side vent of another much larger volcano that erupted thousands of years ago. After the explosion a ring of hills 3 miles wide was left behind.
Those people who just drive through this area have no idea of the beautiful landscape that can be seen once you are in the park. If you do enter the park and take the scenic tour expect to spend at least an hour and a half just on the drive alone. Make sure to include extra time if you plan on hiking on of the many trails available or stopping to have a picnic along the way.
The Lassen Volcanic National Park isn’t one of the most visited places in California but it’s definitely something to add to your list of things to do if you like unusual places that are boasting with nature.
Make sure before planning your trip that you call ahead to make sure the park is open. Heavy snowfalls often cause the park to close. Some years the park has only been fully open for 3 full months because of the weather.
